51 – Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

1998

Directed by Guy Ritchie

Quick synopsis… Hoping to make a bundle in a high-stakes poker game, four shiftless lads from London’s East End instead find themselves swimming in debt to underworld porn king “Hatchet” Harry — and with only a week to repay him.

Does it bother anyone else that this title is missing a comma? Just me? Okay…

Starting out, I wasn’t sure I would be able to get into this movie. It’s not that I thought I wouldn’t like the content or the plot. I mean, Jason Statham alone is cool enough to make a movie work. And it isn’t that I don’t like British film and television… because I do. But I began wondering if this would be too British… if that’s a thing.

Not that I mean to offend any of my readers across the pond. But there are a lot of things that are said in British slang that I just don’t pick up on. Much as I’m sure there are plenty of American terms that have bastardized the English language in the eyes of the queen.

But I appreciate that Guy Ritchie included subtitles for any of the scenes that got really confusing with the Brit-speak.

Overall, I had blast watching this thing. It’s funny but it’s not over the top funny. Clearly what you’d consider a dark comedy. And, sure, it gets pretty violent in a couple of spots. But that’s to be expected when your plot centers around a heist within a heist within a heist. It’s all very cleverly put together.

I won’t say this lands in my own top 100 now, but I’m glad I’ve seen it nonetheless. Having now watched Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, it ranks at 420 out of 2,287 on my personal Flickchart list.

Have you seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels? What did you think? Aside from Statham, how freakin’ cool is Vinnie Jones? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
