Because today is International Juggler’s Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Juggle. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…
I’m not coordinated enough to juggle. For sure I mean juggling small objects like balls or bean bags. But I’m a little afraid I might mean juggling a complicated schedule, as well.
My job involves meeting with clients and helping them out by teaching independent living skills. During the past year and in dealing with COVID-19, much of my job simply involved calling clients to check in by phone. For someone like me, telehealth was kind of the dream. I got to work at home and rarely had to venture out to interact with anyone in the community. I know, an extrovert’s nightmare…
With things slowly returning to normal, the time is coming when telehealth will no longer cut it with the powers that be. I know I’m going to struggle with this.
Not that I haven’t been meeting with clients as needed in recent months. When we first began using telehealth for the bulk of our interactions with clients, we were told we needed to gain permission from a supervisor if a face-to-face session was necessary (for important appointments). As of August, we have been able to meet with clients face-to-face without seeking permission from a supervisor. I’d say, since then, I’ve been doing roughly 50/50… face-to-face and telehealth. Actually, these days, it’s probably more 70/30 on the side of face-to-face sessions.
When I first began this job, a little over a year ago, my biggest struggle was in scheduling. On the one hand, it sounds great when you’re told you can make your own schedule. But when you have six clients who have a certain number of sessions that are needed in a week, it can become difficult to make sure each of those clients are having their needs met. This becomes more difficult when some clients are unreliable regarding their ability to stick to the schedule. Lots of cancelations, y’all.
This is where I stress out. I’m not a fan of relying on others to make sure I can meet my weekly contract, you know?
We’re coming back to that and I know it’s going to be a struggle. I have to move back into the mode of juggling everyone’s schedule with my own… only now I have seven clients and several who have a history of canceling at the last minute. With telehealth as an option, those cancelations aren’t a big deal. Because even if I don’t meet in person, I can still check in over the phone. But that won’t always be an option.
Guess I need to improve those juggling skills…
