84 – The Wages of Fear

Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!

The Wages of Fear

1953

Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot

Quick synopsis… Four outcasts transport two truckloads of nitroglycerine in Central America.

  • HBO Max sure likes to keep their movie synopses short and to the point.
  • That’s where you can find The Wages of Fear, by the way, since it is a part of the Criterion Collection… if you have that particular subscription.
  • Right… the first scene has a little kid naked from the waste down.
  • So there’s that.
  • I’m confused about what’s going on.
  • I can tell it’s extremely hot, wherever we are.
  • Seems like a small, poor town.
  • And the languages are all over the place.
  • I know I’m picking up on Spanish, French, and English for sure…
  • Half an hour in and I’m still having a rough time keeping up with what’s really going on.
  • Here’s what I’m picking up…
  • This town has one thing going for it: the airport.
  • But airfare is too expensive, so you’re kind of stuck there once you get there.
  • Nearby, there’s an American oil company called the SOC.
  • When one of the oil derricks catches fire, there’s a need to transport nitroglycerine to the site to cap the oil fire.
  • Since the nitro has to be transported over rough terrain, it’s extremely dangerous to move.
  • The American unions won’t allow the American employees to do the job, so the SOC heads into the town and offers $2,000 per driver.
  • Seems like this would make a decent plot for a Fast and Furious movie.
  • As it is, I’m fairly certain The Mandalorian paid a bit of an homage to this plot during the seventh episode of the second season.
  • It gets pretty exciting from here… lots of suspense considering the obstacles the two trucks are forced to encounter.
  • Overall, it’s not a bad movie… just wouldn’t be my first choice when I’m looking for something to watch.
  • Having now seen The Wages of Fear, it currently ranks at 1,271 out of 2,254 movies on my personal Flickchart list.

Have you ever seen The Wages of Fear? If so, what did you think? Let me know down in the comments! Next week we come back to comedy with Monty Python’s The Life of Brian.
