85 – The Handmaiden

Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!

The Handmaiden

2016

Directed by Park Chan-wook

Quick synopsis… With help from an orphaned pickpocket, a Korean con man devises an elaborate plot to seduce and bilk a Japanese woman out of her inheritance.

  • From the start, there’s not a lot to say that’s different from the above synopsis.
  • The pickpocket turned handmaiden, Sook-hee, is clearly taken with her lady’s beauty.
  • It’s a creepy situation, as this lady, Hideko, is preparing to marry her uncle.
  • What I’ve seen of this uncle so far… yeah, he’s super creepy.
  • But the Korean con man, passing himself off as Count Fujiwara, wants to sweep in and marry Hideko instead.
  • But this is all just the tip of the iceberg.
  • The story is told in a non-linear fashion.
  • It doesn’t jump around as much as your typical Tarantino flick, but it’s definitely not in chronological order…
  • And it would be a crime for me to reveal all that happens from start to finish.
  • Just know that there are twists that I honestly didn’t see coming.
  • And just when you think you’ve seen the twist coming, something else gets twisted.
  • It’s very twisty.
  • Like I said, I don’t want to reveal any of the unexpected turns the story takes, so I leave it to you to watch and get surprised on your own.
  • Having now seen The Handmaiden, it currently ranks at 929 out of 2,253 movies on my personal Flickchart list.

Have you ever seen The Handmaiden? Were you as surprised by where this story went as I was? Let me know what you thought of it down in the comments! And if you haven’t seen it yet, you can find it available to watch for free if you are an Amazon Prime member. But here’s a disclaimer, it gets pretty graphic with the sexual content. Just so you know. Coming up next week is another film I know nothing about beforehand: The Wages of Fear.
