I derive a great deal of entertainment from YouTube videos. There are a lot of really interesting creators out there who are putting out a lot of entertaining content. One of the channels to which I’m subscribed isn’t an individual creator, but is entertaining and informative nonetheless. It’s the Nerdist channel.

Typically, I only pay attention to the daily Nerdist News updates that show up, usually in the late afternoon. They cover all the good geeky topics like Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whatever they’ve got going on at DC, even the occasional The Office fan theory.

Monday’s edition of Nerdist News jumped back to an oldie but a goodie, Game of Thrones.

As the title of this post suggests, I’ve never really written anything about Game of Thrones on this blog before. But I did enjoy the series. Not from the start. A friend of mine finally talked me into binge watching the first few seasons just before the fifth season was scheduled to begin. It didn’t take me long to get hooked.

And this is even in spite of knowing all the big things that happened on the show prior to season five (Ned Stark’s beheading, the Red Wedding, etc.). I thought it was great and I looked forward to whatever they had in store for the rest of the series.

When it comes down to the final seasons of Game of Thrones, I don’t think I’m as upset as a lot of the fans were/still are. I can’t say I wasn’t a little disappointed. I felt like a lot of what we got in seasons seven and eight was rushed. The impression I got, especially after news broke that show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were going to churn out a brand new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm, was that they were ready to end Game of Thrones and move on to a galaxy far, far away.

Which, let’s face it, is kind of understandable. When you’ve been playing in George R. R. Martin’s sandbox for the last eight years, there’s a good chance you’re gonna be ready to move on to George Lucas’ sandbox. Because he’s got lightsabers. And the Dark Side has cookies.

Fans were further infuriated during San Diego ComicCon last summer when Benioff and Weiss decided at the last minute to skip out on the Game of Thrones panel. The obvious conclusion that a lot of people came to was that they were afraid to face the backlash from disappointed fans only a few weeks after the series finale aired.

According to Monday’s Nerdist News, they finally broke their silence at the Austin Film Festival. But they didn’t really speak much regarding the ending. Mostly they talked about how so many things went wrong in the beginning. I won’t bore you with the details of everything covered in the Nerdist video (you can click here to watch if you’re interested).

Nerdist News host, Amy Vorpahl sums it up by saying, “Honestly, it sounds like the series being successful and as good as it was was in spite of them rather than because of them.” In fact, it sounds a lot like these were just two guys who had no clue what they were doing and fell backwards into a successful television series. Hearing the kinds of things they said about their creative process makes the last two seasons of Game of Thrones almost understandable.

All of this had me worried about their planned Star Wars trilogy. And then I read that the writing/producing duo were backing out of their deal with Lucasfilm. Good thing they rushed the end of Game of Thrones in order to not work on the biggest franchise ever. Honestly, if I were a Hollywood executive, I’m not sure I’d want to hire these guys. They rush the product; they back out when it gets hard; and, from their comments in Austin, it sounds like they don’t know a lot about what they’re doing in the first place.

But, hey, that’s just me…
