Rewatching Buffy – Episode 38

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 20 years ago.

The Beauty and the Beasts

  • It’s that time of the month for our friendly neighborhood werewolf.
  • Oz is being guarded by Willow until Xander comes to take over so she can go get some sleep before her big test the next day.
  • But Xander catches some zzz’s…
  • Meanwhile, Faith and Buffy are patrolling and discussing guys. Specifically Scott Hope, who currently has a thing for Buffy.
  • Faith’s sage wisdom: “All men are beasts.”
  • Cut to a guy being chased down and captured by some kind of beast.
  • The next day at school, we’re introduced to a young couple that we’ve never seen before. Hmm… new people never last long.
  • Giles and Xander are slightly panicking because the guy who was being chased was mauled by a wild animal… unless Oz got out. While Xander was sleeping.
  • Giles is not happy with Xander.
  • In order to stay in school, Buffy has to see the school counselor. Who smokes. In his office. Seems like a good enough guy. He’s probably gonna die.
  • Oz is pretty upset about the killer werewolf thing at the moment, but it could be something else. Faith will guard, Buffy will patrol the woods.
  • In the woods, Buffy is run into by Angel… who is kind of in a feral state.
  • Buffy knocks him out, then takes him back to the mansion and chains him up.
  • She notices a scorch mark on the floor where Angel reappeared.
  • Meanwhile, Willow breaks into the morgue to examine the body of the victim from the previous night.
  • Buffy decides to take over for Faith on guard duty. Probably so she can try and figure out how Angel has returned.
  • Giles arrived and Oz is asleep and safe in his cage. He also wakes Buffy up. Why doesn’t he yell at her like he yelled at Xander.
  • Hmm… Watcher’s pet.
  • She doesn’t tell Giles the truth. She says she dreamed that Angel had come back.
  • Always tell the truth, Buffy.
  • Giles goes into these hypotheticals. With time moving differently in that hell dimension, Angel could have been there being tortured for hundreds of years. It would be hard for anyone to survive that and retain any semblance of self.
  • Later in the day, Buffy goes to visit Angel. He’s still chained up. And he’s still not quite himself. Actually, he’s more like a scared and/or rabid dog.
  • Remember that new couple? They’re making out a closet when the guy notices a jar with what looks like a little bit of antifreeze in it. “You didn’t drink that, did you?” Of course she didn’t. But something doesn’t seem right.
  • Buffy goes to the school counselor and wants to talk to him about Angel because she knows she really can’t talk to any of her friends about it.
  • But the school counselor is dead. He’s pretty much been mauled.
  • Called it.
  • The antifreeze stuff is some kind of steroid. Turns the new couple guy into a Mr. Hyde kind of character.
  • So he’s jealous and abusive and a control freak. He confesses to killing the counselor. Pretty sure he killed the kid from the other night, too.
  • Oz is off the hook. Or, he will be when the truth about this jerk comes out.
  • The boyfriend calms down and apologizes. The girlfriend tells him it’s okay and proceeds to comfort him.
  • I’m sorry. I’ll never understand women who allow men to continually abuse them and then make excuses for their behavior.
  • Don’t try to explain it to me on a psychological level. It’ll just piss me off.
  • There’s no excuse.
  • Just before sunset, Oz meets up with the girlfriend to give her some notes for a class he did well in last year. The boyfriend sees them interacting. Probably doesn’t bode well for Oz.
  • The gang figures out that the girlfriend is the link between the victims thus far.
  • The boyfriend finds Oz locked up in the library. He hulks out and rips the door off the cage and starts to throw Oz around.
  • Then Oz wolfs out. “Time’s up. Rules change.”
  • Buffy tries to tranq Oz and the boyfriend, but the girlfriend shoves her causing her to shoot Giles.
  • “Right, bloody priceless.” And then he passes out. Hilarious.
  • Faith takes the tranq gun and goes after Oz. Buffy goes after the boyfriend.
  • The girlfriend finds the boyfriend first. And he kills her.
  • Buffy begins to fight the boyfriend, but then Angel shows up and kills the guy.
  • He’s not quite back to his old self, but he’s getting there. He recognizes Buffy this time.
  • Body count: Humans – 4
