Once upon a time, there was a girl who went to Bluefield College. Bluefield, as I’m sure dozens of people know, is the home to the Ramblin’ Rams. During my senior year, we had a pretty decent basketball team. So in the name of school spirit, each home game became an event that was not to be missed by the student body. One of these particular games was one that everyone was excited about. School colors were being worn, posters were being hung, faces were being painted.
The girl’s face was one of those faces. It was an elaborate work of art. If I remember correctly, half of her face was painted blue, the other half white. Across her cheeks, written in red, were the words “GO RAMS.” At least, that’s what it said when she saw herself in the mirror.
To be honest, I’m not sure at what point during the day she did this to herself. But I do know that no one pointed her mistake out until I said something before our 4 o’clock choir rehearsal. I think I said something to the effect of, “Your face looks great… But what does SMAR OG mean?” Needless to say she ran back to her dorm and had to repaint her entire face. Looking back, I still think it’s pretty funny.
That mirror mess-up was the inspiration for the license plate I had on my car for a lot of years. In a lot of ways, I’m sorry I gave up that plate. It was a good conversation starter. Though it may have only made proper sense to people driving in front of me.
