I’ve recently watched though the entire run of Gilmore Girls. Despite being a grown man, I’m perfectly comfortable making that statement publicly. It’s a pretty well-written show with a lot of humor woven into the drama. There are some topical references that don’t make much sense these days, but the show ended eight years ago, so that’s the be expected.
Having now seen every episode, I have to ask, why do so many people like the character of Jess? For the uninitiated, Jess was the second of three love interests with whom Rory Gilmore had a relationship throughout the course of the series. I’ve heard from a number of female friends who believe that Jess should have been “the one” for Rory. I’m pretty sure I even came across a Buzzfeed article at one point that claimed Jess was the perfect guy for Rory. How could anyone possibly believe that?
The guy was a jerk to any and everyone who had the misfortune of crossing his path from day one. He was a jerk to Luke, his uncle and temporary guardian. He was a jerk to Dean, Rory’s first boyfriend, becoming the catalyst for that particular break-up. He claimed to love Rory, but he was a jerk to her, too.
When he broke up with her, he didn’t even bother to have a conversation. He couldn’t call her and say, “Hey, I’m leaving town because I need to find my father in California and film a backdoor pilot for a possible spin off that will ultimately be rejected by the network. So I don’t think we should be together anymore. Sorry I treated you like crap since the day you met me.” No, he just left. He called her from a payphone at some point much later, but I feel like that was just to pour some salt on a wound as it had just begun to heal.
Thankfully, his bad boy charms don’t work on every female viewer. I know of at least one friend who agrees he was a jerk. And I’m pretty sure my sister didn’t like him either. I salute you two ladies for your ability to be unswayed by a crappy car and horrible attitude.
I’m sure people are able to give logical arguments backing any of Rory’s significant others. As far as I’m concerned, none of those guys was good enough for Rory Gilmore. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Yes, Luke. Yes.
I totally agree! Jess was a complete jerk. My roommates tried to argue that they were meant to be because he was on her intellectual level. I still think it’s more important to be a nice person. I never really liked Logan either. He was way too full of himself. So I guess I’m team Dean. He was immature and made bad decisions, but he was the best of the options presented. Just my two cents. Love, a rabid GG fan. 🙂

This was my favorite show of all time and I couldn’t agree with you more. Although I did really want her to marry Logan. Though I see now he was not right for her either!

LOVED AND MISS THE GILMORE GIRLS AND I HATED JESS!!!!! It’s also interesting to know that Alexis Bledel (Rory) dated Milo Ventimiglia (Jess) for a few years when he was on the show, and they later broke up because he cheated on Alexis with his then “Heroes” costar Hayden Panettiere after he left GG!
