If you haven’t watched the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso yet, you’re missing out on some of the most delightfully quirky and unexpectedly insightful dialogue to grace the small screen in recent memory. The show follows an American football coach, played brilliantly by Jason Sudeikis, who is hired to coach an English soccer team despite knowing nothing about the sport. Hilarity and heartwarming moments ensue.
But beyond the fish-out-of-water premise and feel-good vibes, Ted Lasso consistently delivers witty one-liners and nuggets of wisdom that stick with you long after the credits roll. Ted’s unique perspectives and goofy yet earnest delivery make him an endless source of quotable quips.
To give you a taste, here are some of my favorite Ted-isms from the show:
“Be curious, not judgmental.”
“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. Y’know why? It’s got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish.”
“I think that if you care about someone and you got a little love in your heart, there ain’t nothing you can’t get through together.”
“Doing the right thing is never the wrong thing.”
“You say impossible, but all I hear is ‘I’m possible.'”
Part of what makes Ted so endearing is how he faces challenges with optimism and never takes himself too seriously, even when he’s way out of his depth. Like this gem: “I feel like we fell out of a lucky tree, hit every branch on the way down, ended up in a pool full of cash and Sour Patch Kids.”
He’s also hilariously baffled by things like tea (“Absolute garbage water”) and the offside rule in soccer, which he compares to the US Supreme Court’s definition of pornography: “It ain’t easy to explain, but you know it when you see it.”
But amidst the silliness, Ted also drops some real wisdom, often when his team needs it most. Like this poignant locker room speech: “Please do me this favor, will you? Lift your heads up and look around this locker room… Because I promise you, there is something worse out there than being sad, and that is being alone and being sad. Ain’t nobody in this room alone.”
Whether he’s making oddly specific pop culture references (Frank Sinatra’s love life, anyone?) or serving up homespun advice, Ted’s words have a way of cutting through the noise and finding the heart of the matter. And couldn’t we all use a little more of that these days?
I’ve only scratched the surface of Ted’s many memorable lines here. I’d love to hear some of your favorites – leave ’em in the comments! And if you haven’t watched Ted Lasso yet, trust me, it’s well worth your time. Just be warned, you might find yourself craving biscuits and adopting a new life philosophy by the time you’re done.
We just finished Season 3 yesterday and a standout for me was: What do you get when you cross a helicopter with a rhino? A hell-if-I-know. Pure gold!! 😂
