It’s time to dive into the scorching second episode of Season Two, “Heat.” This installment turns up the temperature in more ways than one as Clark Kent grapples with a new power and Lex Luthor finds himself in a whirlwind romance. Let’s break it down, shall we?
Smallville is in the midst of a record-breaking heat wave when Clark and his friends return for their sophomore year. Enter the sultry new biology teacher, Desirée Atkins (played by Krista Allen), who catches the eye of both Clark and Lex. In a surprising twist, Lex announces his engagement to Desirée, leaving Clark shocked and suspicious. As Clark struggles to control his newly manifested heat vision, he discovers that Desirée has the ability to control men with her pheromones. Chaos ensues as Desirée manipulates Lex and even turns Jonathan Kent against his own son. In the end, Clark saves the day, Lex gets an annulment, and Lana breaks up with Whitney via video message. Just another day in Smallville!
This episode marks a significant milestone in Clark’s journey towards becoming Superman. The emergence of his heat vision showcases the ongoing development of his powers and the challenges he faces in controlling them. It also highlights the importance of his upbringing, as Jonathan Kent helps him master this new ability through patience and practice.
On the flip side, “Heat” offers a glimpse into Lex’s vulnerability and his longing for love and acceptance. His whirlwind romance with Desirée, while influenced by her powers, underscores his desire for a genuine connection. This episode also foreshadows Lex’s future romantic entanglements and his struggle to find a partner who truly understands him.
In true Smallville fashion, “Heat” features one notable vehicular incident: Desirée’s car explosion. While it’s unclear who was behind the wheel (if anyone), it adds to the episode’s drama and serves as a catalyst for Clark’s arrest.
On a lighter note, let’s talk about the revolving door at the Luthor mansion. In this episode alone, we have Clark, Desirée, and Jonathan all popping in unannounced. It’s almost as if Lex’s security team is on a permanent coffee break. But hey, who needs privacy when you’re a billionaire in Smallville?
“Heat” is a sizzling episode that pushes the boundaries of passion and power. It showcases the show’s ability to blend teenage drama with supernatural elements, all while keeping us invested in the characters’ journeys. Plus, who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned meteor-freak-of-the-week story?
Now it’s your turn, fellow Smallville enthusiasts! What did you think of “Heat”? Did you find yourself fanning your face during those steamy scenes? And more importantly, how many times did you yell at your screen, “No, Lex, don’t trust her!” Let us know in the comments below!
Until next time, keep cool and keep watching Smallville!

One of the hottest episodes of the entire show. Desirée was very memorable indeed. I actually forgot that Clark got his heat vision in season 2, but any episode where he gets a new power is always gonna be important and memorable.
