Rewatching Smallville – Episode 20

Welcome back to Rewatching Smallville, my weekly dive into the iconic series that explores Clark Kent’s journey before becoming Superman. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the show, you’re invited to join in each Tuesday as I revisit episodes and share my thoughts and observations. Be sure to share your own memories and theories in the comments below!

We’ve reached Episode 20, “Obscura,” which delivers a thrilling storyline that delves into Lana Lang’s newfound psychic abilities. Buckle up, because this episode is a wild ride.

The episode kicks off with Lana and Whitney enjoying a peaceful horseback ride—until a massive explosion interrupts their tranquil moment. Lana is knocked off her feet and sprinkled with mysterious green stones, setting the stage for her psychic journey. Meanwhile, Chloe heads to Metropolis for a Daily Planet internship interview, only to be kidnapped by a masked assailant. Talk about bad timing!

As Lana’s visions intensify, she sees glimpses of Chloe’s predicament, leading Clark and the gang on a frantic search for their intrepid reporter friend. The episode masterfully weaves together Lana’s newfound abilities, Chloe’s kidnapping, and the ongoing mystery surrounding the meteor shower that changed Smallville forever.

Speaking of the meteor shower, Lex Luthor’s obsession with the event takes center stage as he investigates a crop duster’s claim of a mysterious spaceship. This subplot not only adds depth to Lex’s character but also foreshadows his eventual descent into villainy. The discovery of an otherworldly octagonal disc in Miller’s Field only fuels Lex’s curiosity, setting the stage for future conflicts with Clark and the Kents.

On a lighter note, let’s talk about the vehicular mayhem in this episode. We’ve got exploding gas lines, abandoned cars in the woods, and a bullet-deflecting Clark (more on that later). But an abandoned car does not an accident make, leaving us at a grand total of nothing in this episode.

The episode culminates in a thrilling showdown at the carnival grounds, where Deputy Watts, the mastermind behind Chloe’s kidnapping, holds Lana hostage. Clark, in true superhero fashion, arrives just in time to save the day, deflecting bullets with his bare hands like the Superman we all know and love. The visual effects in this scene are top-notch, showcasing Clark’s growing powers and hinting at his future as the Man of Steel.

“Obscura” also treats us to some heartwarming moments, like Clark reminiscing about his first encounter with Chloe and awkwardly asking her to the Spring Formal. Their budding romance is a delight to watch, even if we know it’s destined to remain in the friend zone.

Oh, and can we, once again, talk about how people just waltz into the Luthor Mansion like it’s a public library? Roger Nixon and Dr. Hamilton—they seem to have an open invitation. I guess when you’re a billionaire, security isn’t a top priority.

In conclusion, “Obscura” is a standout episode that pushes the boundaries of Smallville‘s storytelling. It gives us a taste of Lana’s untapped potential, delves into the mystery surrounding Clark’s origins, and sets the stage for Lex’s future as a formidable antagonist. Plus, it’s got explosions, kidnappings, and Clark being his heroic self. What more could you ask for?

Now it’s your turn, dear readers. What did you think of “Obscura”? Did Lana’s psychic abilities catch you by surprise? And how about that cliffhanger ending with Dr. Hamilton’s discovery? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s keep the Smallville discussion going!
