In this week’s installment, we’re tackling “Metamorphosis,” the second episode of Smallville‘s inaugural season. If you thought the Pilot was action-packed, buckle up because this episode is a wild ride – especially if you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle in Smallville.

The episode kicks off with a creepy callback to the Pilot, as Greg Arkin, a classmate of Clark and Lana, is shown stalking Lana and recording her with a video camera. But Greg’s not just a garden-variety teenage creeper; he’s also an avid insect collector. In a twist of fate that could only happen in Smallville, Greg’s car hits a bump, shattering a jar full of meteor rock-infected bugs that proceed to bite him. As one might expect, this doesn’t end well for Greg.

Meanwhile, Clark is grappling with his newfound ability to float in his sleep, resulting in a broken bed frame and some awkward conversations with his parents. Lana confronts Whitney about the scarecrow incident, and Lex Luthor begins to take an interest in the strange happenings around Smallville.

But back to Greg – the bug bites have transformed him into a sort of human-insect hybrid, complete with enhanced strength, speed, and the ability to secrete webbing. Naturally, he sets his sights on Lana as his mate and kidnaps her, leading to a showdown with Clark at a tree house near the Creekside Foundry.

In the end, Clark defeats Greg, who is crushed by falling machinery, and Whitney rescues Lana from her cocoon. The episode wraps up with Clark returning Lana’s necklace anonymously, a gesture that showcases his growing feelings for her.

“Metamorphosis” is a solid follow-up to the Pilot, expanding on the show’s central themes and relationships. We see more of Clark’s powers and the challenges he faces in understanding and controlling them. Lex’s curiosity about the strange events in Smallville is piqued, hinting at his future obsession with uncovering Clark’s secrets. And of course, the love triangle between Clark, Lana, and Whitney continues to develop.

One thing that stands out in this episode is the sheer number of vehicular accidents. By my count, there were three: Greg’s initial crash after being swarmed by bugs, Whitney’s truck exploding after Greg attacks him, and Greg’s demise via falling machinery. It’s a wonder anyone in Smallville manages to keep their insurance rates down.

Overall, “Metamorphosis” is an enjoyable episode that further establishes the show’s unique blend of teen drama, science fiction, and Superman lore. It’s a fun if somewhat campy, exploration of the challenges Clark faces as he navigates his powers and relationships.

But what did you think of the episode? Did you find Greg’s transformation convincing, or was it a bit too far-fetched, even for Smallville? And what about Clark’s anonymous return of Lana’s necklace – a sweet gesture, or a missed opportunity for him to be more direct with his feelings?
