Greetings, dear readers! Your favorite TV critic is back with a retro review of a classic episode from one of the most beloved sci-fi shows of the late 80s/early 90s – Quantum Leap. This week I’m tackling season 5, episode 14 – “Dr. Ruth.”
Man, this episode is a doozy. It’s the one where Sam leaps into iconic sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer. I have to say, Scott Bakula does a hilarious impression of the pint-sized doctor’s accent and mannerisms. Of course, this leads to plenty of fish-out-of-water comedy as Sam struggles to dish out sex advice on Dr. Ruth’s radio show.
The main plot revolves around Annie, a secretary being sexually harassed by her slimeball boss Jonathan. Sam encourages her to go to the police, but things escalate when Jonathan starts stalking her. There’s a harrowing scene where he breaks into Annie’s apartment to assault her, only for Sam (as Dr. Ruth) to heroically knock him out just as the cops arrive. Talk about an unlikely action hero!
There’s also a touching B plot with Al working through his commitment issues thanks to some therapy from the real Dr. Ruth in the waiting room. Their scenes provide welcome moments of emotion among the wacky comedy. And of course, Al vows to finally confess his love to Tina… good for you, Al!
Overall, this episode is chock-full of classic Quantum Leap moments: humor, drama, Sam being a fish-out-of-water, Al’s womanizing ways, and most importantly, Sam helping someone in need. It further develops Al’s character and features great performances from Bakula and Stockwell.
I’d say “Dr. Ruth” is a must-watch episode, especially for devoted QL fans. It’s a prime example of how the show skillfully blended science fiction, comedy, and social issues. The only downside is the rather cheesy ending with Sam easily defeating the villain, but hey, it was the 90s.
Let me know your thoughts on this classic episode in the comments! Were you a fan of Dr. Ruth’s guest appearance? What are some of your other favorite Quantum Leap moments? I look forward to geeking out over this awesome show with you all!
