Welcome to Bloganuary. It’s this thing that WordPress is doing to encourage bloggers to post something every day by providing a regular prompt. I think that “Bloguary” would not only sound better but makes more sense. Maybe they’re saving that for next month. But if they go with Blogebruary I’m dropping out. Anyway, today’s prompt asks the question: What books do you want to read?
Man… I really dropped the ball on this Bloganuary thing over the weekend. Maybe it’s because January is finally almost over. I don’t know. Anyway…
Y’all… There are so many books sitting on my to be read shelf, it’s almost shameful. I mean, I wouldn’t feel ashamed about how many books there are to be read if I were actually reading. But I’m not. I haven’t read through a full book since June of 2022, when I read The Midnight Library.
That was a fantastic book, by the way. If you haven’t read that one yet, I highly recommend it.
Here’s how bad it is… Last year, when they released the first trailer for the Hunger Games prequel, I had every intention of re-reading the original trilogy of books, plus the prequel, so I could be properly disappointed by the movie. Never happened…
I joined some book of the month club… Or is it the Book of the Month Club? Anyway, I thought getting a new novel every month would light a fire under me, inspiring me to read. It sure didn’t. You know what it did? It gave me eight new books that I still never got around to reading before realizing I should stop my subscription.
Rick Riordan wrote a 6th book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, years after the 5th (and final?) book was published. Apparently there’s a 7th due out this September. I have book six… But have I read it? We all know the answer to that. Oh, and there are other series of books he’s written connected to his world of Greek and Roman mythology that I still haven’t read.
That bucket list goal I have of reading everything by Stephen King in order of publication? The last one I read was Misery. That was almost three years ago.
Why can’t I find the motivation to read? There are so many books I want to devour, but I just don’t pick them up. When I do, I often wait until I’m too tired to comprehend even the simplest words on the page and wind up dozing off. I know that audiobooks are a possibility… But I just don’t think about listening to those when I’m at home. I used to listen to them all the time when I had a long commute to work. But now I literally live two blocks from my office. Not a lot of listening time there.
So if anyone has an idea for how to regain the motivation to read tons of books, let me know the secret.
I have the same problem sadly!
