Twenty One – Bloganuary

Welcome to Bloganuary. It’s this thing that WordPress is doing to encourage bloggers to post something every day by providing a regular prompt. I think that “Bloguary” would not only sound better but makes more sense. Maybe they’re saving that for next month. But if they go with Blogebruary I’m dropping out. Anyway, today’s prompt asks the question: Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

Well hello internet friends! It’s me, Aaron. Today I get to talk a little bit about my name and what it means. I know, riveting stuff, right? But hey, it’s Sunday, it’s today’s Bloganuary prompt, and I’m feeling introspective.

So let’s start with the basics: Aaron is a Hebrew name that means “high mountain” or “exalted.” You heard that right folks – my parents named me after a mountain! Not sure if I live up to the lofty expectations of my name, unless we’re talking about my ability to demolish a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch or binge multiple seasons of a show on Netflix.

The name has Biblical origins, as Aaron was the older brother of Moses and the first high priest of the Israelites. So I come from priestly stock! But I’m no man of the cloth. If you could hear some of the words that come out of my mouth in a fit of road rage…

Aaron has been a popular name for centuries, but it’s funny how names go in and out of fashion. I went to school with a few other Aarons, but now I don’t meet as many younger guys with the name. I guess I’m old and uncool now, sigh. At least I can laugh at that Key & Peele sketch that brought my name back into the spotlight!

So there you have it – a quick peek into the origins and meaning behind my thoroughly average name. Thanks for indulging me! Let me know in the comments if you have any interesting stories or meanings behind your first name. I’m all ears!

  1. Technically my given name is Rebecca but I go by Becky; I always have. Rebecca is Hebrew for “to tie” or “bind”. Rumor has it is that my mom thought I was going to be a boy and she “lost” so my dad named me Rebecca. I find it funny how many people don’t realize that Becky is short for Rebecca and are shocked when they find out my given name is Rebecca.

PS: My cousin has a son named Aaron and sometimes he’ll call him A-a-ron at family functions and I laugh and I think I’m the only one who gets it.
