Barcode

Because today is National Barcode Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Barcode. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…

Seems like a strange thing to celebrate… the barcode. Why is there a National Barcode Day?

I looked it up… Apparently, this is the anniversary of the first time a product’s barcode was scanned in 1974. I guess that’s a big deal.

Because what did stores do before the barcode? I guess cashiers at the grocery store had to type in every price for every item individually. Imagine how long that took. I mean, I was born in 1980, so I’ve only known a world with barcodes and scanners. And even that world has changed.

These days, a lot of stores have decided that you don’t need special training to scan the barcodes on your items. In an effort to cut down on how many employees they have to pay, we have the self check-out lines where you can scan your own groceries. I wonder how many jobs were lost and how much money that actually saved the average supermarket.

So… I guess… yay, barcodes?

Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.

Be sure to come back on Wednesday for the next Sunday Scribblings prompt! Encourage other bloggers to challenge themselves with the prompt! Remember that there are no rules for what you write, other than responding to the prompt! You can write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, biography, instruction… it’s all up to you!
