Because today is National Static Electricity Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Static. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…
I remember static electricity being kind of cool when I was a kid. You scuff your feet on the carpet and really let it build up and then you quietly reach over to touch your unsuspecting little sister on the arm and then BOOM! ELECTRICITY! SHOCK! CRIES OF PAIN!
Now when I think of static electricity, I just feel annoyed. I think about the jacket that clings to my long-sleeved shirt because the static has built up throughout the day. I think about finally peeling said jacket off and knowing that as soon as I touch anything, I’m gonna feel that electric sting on my fingertip. But then I forget about that and flip the light switch anyway, saying, “Ouch!” like it was a complete surprise.
No… what I should do is touch the wall or the door frame before attempting to touch anything metal or connected to electricity. Because that removes the static electricity without the pain of getting shocked. Then I’m free to turn on all the lights in the house if I see fit to do so. I don’t know how it works. Science, I guess.
I should probably go back and watch old episodes of Bill Nye the Science Guy. I’m sure he did a static electricity episode at some point. Probably made it seem super fun… with balloons rubbing against people’s hair and sticking those balloons to the wall. Science!
Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.
Be sure to come back on Wednesday for the next Sunday Scribblings prompt! Encourage other bloggers to challenge themselves with the prompt! Remember that there are no rules for what you write, other than responding to the prompt! You can write fiction, non-fiction, poetry, prose, biography, instruction… it’s all up to you!
