Welcome to The Best Movies I’ve Never Seen! This is the part of the blog where I work my way through 100 films I’ve never seen that are generally considered to be great. You’re invited to watch along with me if you can find a copy or find it streaming. So grab some popcorn and let’s get started!
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Directed by Martin McDonagh
Quick synopsis… When law enforcement fails to make headway on the months-long hunt for her daughter’s killer, Mildred Hayes takes the drastic step of putting up three large signs questioning the motivation of the town’s widely respected police chief.
Before sitting down to do even the minimal research that I typically do for any of these movies I’ve never seen before, I thought for sure this was a Coen Brothers film. I mean… you’ve got a stacked cast led by Frances McDormand. But… nope. Not even produced or written by a Coen.
This is one of those movies that I find difficult to summarize in a couple of paragraphs, because there is a lot happening. Also, I still consider this one a fairly recent film, so I don’t want to ruin anything for you. Especially because I definitely recommend it if you have a couple of hours to spare. Maybe save it for after the holidays… It’s not really a feel good movie.
So I’m just going to have to recommend that you go on the synopsis I got from the Netflix description. Also, I would be doing this movie a disservice if I failed to mention how friggin’ fantastic the actors are in this thing. Especially McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell. They all knock this one out of the park.
Having now seen Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it comes in at number 491 out of 2,282 movies on my personal Flickchart list.
