Mother

Because today is Mother’s Day, our Sunday Scribblings prompt for this week is Mother. If you decide to write a post based on this week’s prompt, be sure to go back here and share your link so everyone can see how you interpreted things! Here’s what I did with it…

It’s funny… I lived in North Carolina for several years and hardly ever called home to check in with my mom. Then, I moved back to Virginia and lived about an hour away from my hometown and still… hardly ever called home to check in with my mom.

Now that I’m back to living in the city where I grew up, I’m basically on the phone with Mom about every other day. And she’s just on the other side of town.

Granted, part of that became a habit throughout the last year as I liked to regularly check in with her and my stepdad due to the pandemic. You know… just wanted to make sure everyone was still healthy. Thankfully, I can report that neither of them came down with the COVID. And they are both now fully vaccinated, so there’s that.

But I still find myself calling Mom on a fairly regular basis. I know she appreciates those calls because she’s said so a number of times. I appreciate being able to call and know that she’s willing to listen to whatever it is I have to say. Sometimes I have to vent. Sometimes I have questions that, even as an adult, I still just assume parents will know the answers to. Sometimes I just want to talk to someone who isn’t one of my clients.

I think another part of my continued regular check in with Mom comes from a desire to not take her presence for granted. I lost Dad when I was 26 years old. There’s never a guarantee that the people we love will be here from one day to the next.

If your mother is still with you, give her a call… give her a hug. I’ll be seeing mine for lunch today.

Thanks to everyone who participated this week and shared your links! Please visit their blogs, give them a follow, and take a look at how they interpreted the prompt.

  1. Nice story. I was lucky to have my mom close my whole life until the last year when she moved about an hour and a half away to live with my sister. I have issues with my sister and there is the pandemic so I haven’t seen mom in a year but I do make sure to call her at least once a week.
