Question of the Week #240

Have you ever told anyone that you didn’t like or love your parents?

I was a teenager once, wasn’t I? It’s a rare person who hasn’t, at one point or another, in a fit of rage or a rebellious streak, claimed they hated their parents. Either one, the other, or both. Even if life has proven them to be loving, faithful, and supportive parents.

I don’t think I’ve ever said that I did not love my parents. Though I’m almost certain that I’ve said I didn’t like my mom or my dad at some point(s) throughout my life.

That’s one I can logic my way through. Knowing there’s a difference between like and love… I can love someone unconditionally. But that doesn’t mean I have to like them all the time. More specifically, I guess, I don’t have to like something they’ve done or said… but that doesn’t change my love for them.

Have you ever told anyone you didn’t like or love your parents? Let me know down in the comments!

  1. I have – but more so now as an adult being able to see some toxic traits in my mom and our relationship has weakened because of them. I try to be a good daughter still but I am human and my own feelings block me from pushing reality from my mind but I am trying to work on it

  2. Me too. I’ve admitted, at times, how toxic relationships made me feel. As an adult I’ve tried to honor my parents even if emotion was absent. It’s complicated. Tough trying to answer this question. Questions are not a bad thing. They give us reason to take an honest look at uncomfortable topics.
