Question of the Week #213

What would you like to be doing five years from now? What do you think you will be doing five years from now?

Oh yeah… these two questions definitely have very different answers.

All right. What would I like to be doing in five years? I’d like to be a published author. Wait, there’s more. I’d also like for one of those obviously best-selling novels to be on its way to a big screen adaptation. Because all of that would mean that suddenly I’ve got a lot of money and can live the dream of working from home. And in working from home I would be working on my next best-seller.

What do I think I’ll be doing in five years? I think I’ll still be living paycheck to paycheck. I’ll be struggling to make ends meet. And if history has taught me anything, I’ll have somehow found my way into and out of two different companies in that time. I actually hope that’s not true at all. I hope I’m still where I am now. But I have no doubt the struggling thing will still be the case. Because this is America and that’s just the way it is.

Sorry, y’all… I don’t actively try to be a pessimist. But it’s real hard to look at the future through the lens of my current depression and see anything but cynical bleakness. And now that I’ve brought us all down…

Where do you see yourself in five years? What do you hope for? What do you expect? Let me know down in the comments!

  1. In five years, I will be 21 aka drinking age, but not drinking. Alcohol doesn’t appeal to me at all. I see myself struggling, but hopefully making it in college. At least making it enough that I end up surviving all four years.

  2. In 5 years I’ll be almost 38 – hopefully married with a kid! Which means I’ll be out of this living situation which is a MUST even if I’m not married haha!! I’m happy with my job but I’d love to be making more money haha!! And just like you, writing and being published! Lol

  3. I’d like to have a degree and job of my own in 5 years – but realistically, it might not happen so soon as I can’t go back until my son is in school full time. I keep telling myself that as long as it happens, it’s okay if it gets delayed, but it’s a frequent source of disappointment.
