Top 10 Movies of the 2010s

This is definitely something new to the blog. I mean, of course it’s new, because this is the first time The Confusing Middle has crossed over into a new decade. And even though I’ve been blogging for more than a decade, I never did a look back at the best movies of the 2000s. And I’m pretty sure that’s because, back in 2009, I had yet to discover Flickchart.

Now, I’ve been Flickcharting for the better part of the 2010s and feel I have a fairly accurate list. I mean, I’ve looked through it and there are several movies that throw off the list from time to time. But overall, a lot of it makes sense to me.

According to the site, I have seen 525 movies that were produced between 2010 and 2019. I’m curious as to how many movies I’ve seen from other decades… I feel like 525 is a lot. Are there jobs out there where they pay people to watch movies? I think I’d be good at that.

Anyway, what you’ll find here are the ten movies that, according to Flickchart, were my favorites of the decade. I’m sure there will be some surprises. But most likely the surprises will come in the form of movies that don’t make the list…

10 – The Avengers

AvengersWe’re talking about the first Marvel team-up movie. I’m sure it will come as a surprise that this made the list but Endgame did not. But I’ll defend this… Endgame did an amazing job of wrapping up the first 11 years of MCU history. But this is the one that gave us the idea that a team-up could actually work. It’s the reason Warner Bros. shot themselves in the foot rushing to get a Justice League movie into theaters that just didn’t work.

9 – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Into the Spider-VerseBest. Spider-Man movie. Ever. Come at me, bro.

8 – The Lego Movie

Lego MovieI think I was a little surprised that this one made my personal Top 100 of all time, so I’m equally surprised that it’s in my Top 10 of the decade. But since both lists come based on choices I’ve made on Flickchart, it’s not a surprise that they echo one another. Don’t get me wrong, this movie is good. In fact, I’d go so far as to say everything is awesome. I just think that, after a few years of aging the movie, something more deserving could be in this spot.

7 – Shazam!

ShazamThis was my number one movie of 2019. So I guess it’s not a surprise that it makes this list. Not sure what else I can say about it that I didn’t already say a few days ago. It’s Big meets superheroes.

6 – Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars The Last JediThat’s right, The Last Jedi is my favorite of the sequel trilogy. It did so much to subvert everyone’s expectations and I still applaud Rian Johnson for taking the risks he did. I thin I’d have respected Rise of Skywalker a lot more if JJ Abrams had taken a page from Johnson’s playbook. Who knows… maybe he did. Maybe Disney and Lucasfilm stepped in and made unreasonable demands of JJ to play it safe. Not the first time a studio has altered what could have been a great movie. I’m looking at you, Warner Bros.

5 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow, Part 2

Hary Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2The Harry Potter movies were still coming out in the 2010s? They feel so long ago!

4 – Les Miserables

Les Miserables.gifI loved this movie. I saw it on Christmas day with my family in 2012. I cried like a little girl. I saw it again a few weeks later at the retro theater in Blacksburg. I cried like a little girl again. But that time I sang along, too.

3 – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1

2 – Deadpool

Deadpool.gifInfinitely entertaining. Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. I cannot wait to see how Disney folds him into the MCU with the next sequel.

1 – Wonder Woman

Wonder WomanI mean, was there any doubt? Still, at this point, the best thing to come out DC’s answer to a cinematic universe. Really looking forward to WW84.

If you’re wondering what ranked at 525 as the worst movie I saw this decade, it was Hurricane Heist. And it earned that spot.

  1. I’m so torn about which Sequel Star Wars movie is my favourite. I think Force Awakens has the best writing, while Rise of Skywalker has the most appealing ideas, whereas The Last Jedi is a good balance between writing and ideas.
