The Other Guys
2010
Directed by Adam McKay
Quick Synopsis… While an elite pair of New York City cops nabs headlines for their amazing heroics, fellow boys in blue Allen and Terry toil in obscurity as lowly desk jockeys, until a big break finally gives them a chance to tackle real police work.
- Can someone explain to me why we got a sequel to Ferrell and Wahlberg’s other movie, Daddy’s Home and have yet to get one for this one?
- The Other Guys is a much better movie.
- Of course, half of why it’s worth watching is the first 15 minutes.
- Allen Gamble (Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) are partners.
- Hoitz really has zero respect for his partner.
- The first interaction we get with these two is priceless. Especially when Gamble goes into his monologue about how his school of tuna would go after Hoitz’s pride of lions.
- And then watching the invincible Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson jump off a 20 story building while chasing after some criminals is both disturbing and hilarious.
- “Aim for the bushes.” There are no bushes… Just pavement… Ker-splat.
- With New York’s heroes gone, someone needs to step up to fill the void. Hoitz thinks that now it’s their time to shine.
- Hard to convince Gamble to get on board when he’s content to sit at a desk and do paperwork.
- It should be noted that Hoitz is known by all the others as the “Yankee Clipper” because he shot Derek Jeter.
- Gamble and Hoitz get pulled into a bigger case than they think when Gamble chases after some scaffolding permit violations.
- Hilarity ensues.
- Misunderstandings are had.
- Hoitz and Gamble grow to respect each other, even become friends… And then they’re pulled off the case… demoted…
- It follows the buddy cop movie formula set out by Abed in the Community first season episode, “The Science of Illusion.”
- And still, I argue that this movie is better and funnier than Daddy’s Home. Come at me, bro.
If you’ve seen The Other Guys, what did you think about it? Let me know in the comments. Tomorrow’s movie begins with a P, of course. Want to take a guess at what it is? It’s a big budget sci-fi setting starring two of Hollywood’s most popular people in recent years. It was highly anticipated and wound up disappointing a lot of people.
I’m not sure if I’ve seen this entire movie but the only part I know is “You shot Derek Jeter! He’s a biracial angel!”

OMG love love love this movie! So funny and I must have watched it so many times. I live in NY and I’m a huge Yankees fan so the whole Derek Jeter thing is awesome…”you should have shot A-Rod!” The dynamic between Ferrell and Wahlberg is so brilliant in this film. Some of my fav line: “I’m a peacock you got to let me fly!” “Did you just yell America?” OMG the whole dynamic with Eva Mendes where he’s like you come in here dressed like a hobo and it’s distracting. “You learned to dance like that sarcastically?” Sorry I could go on and on, but I love that you chose this one! Simply amazing! This made my day! 🙂

I’ve got a couple of friends that have the whole exchange between Ferrell and Wahlberg at the beginning memorized and they’ll go back and forth whenever we get together. “We have a taste for lion now!”
