Rewatching Buffy – Episode 93

buffy-titleWelcome to Rewatching Buffy, the part of the blog where I rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Each Tuesday evening, you’re invited to join me as I attempt to rediscover what made me love this show 21 years ago.

I Was Made to Love You

  • Giles and Xander try to cheer Buffy up after the horror that was finding out Spike has a crush on her.
  • Sunnydale, apparently, has a less than stellar reputation. This, according to a random driver who gave a nice girl a ride.
  • “What are you looking for in Sunnydale, anyway?”
  • She happily replies, “True love.”
  • She might actually be Giselle from Enchanted.
  • Except this isn’t Amy Adams. She guest starred on a different episode of Buffy and she so didn’t play Giselle.
  • Joyce has a date. Isn’t that nice?
  • Anya and Tara are walking through town and bump into the girl looking for true love.
  • She stops and says she’s looking for Warren. Unfortunately they don’t know Warren.
  • “No harm in asking,” she says happily. She’s very cheerful.
  • Buffy runs into Ben at a party.
  • Uh… why is the local doctor hanging out at an undergrad frat party?
  • Especially one who is actually Glory in disguise?!
  • Happy girl shows up at the party, too. She’s still looking for Warren.
  • Who just happens to be a this party!
  • With his girlfriend…
  • Spike shows up, too. At this point, I mean, I know he’s a series regular and he has to stick around… But every time he approaches Buffy while she’s disgusted by him, I have to ask, why doesn’t she just stake him? It would be so easy…
  • Ben winds up asking Buffy out. Which seems sorta nice.
  • Except for the fact that he’s Glory.
  • When happy girl asks Spike about Warren, he asks who she is. Her name is April.
  • He then whispers something inappropriate in her ear.
  • This doesn’t go well. Because she throws him out the window.
  • Like… picks him up and throws him through a window. She’s super strong.
  • But she’s not a slayer. And she’s not a Glory. So what is she?
  • A robot. She’s a robot. Warren built a girl robot.
  • Yeah, it’s as creepy as it sounds.
  • Joyce had a great time on her date. Isn’t that nice?
  • April the Robot is going door to door looking for Warren. At 3:30 in the morning.
  • This is becoming a problem.
  • The gang tracks Warren down and when Buffy pops by, he’s packing and getting ready to skip town.
  • His girlfriend is the jealous type. Buffy coming by makes her want to leave. So she does.
  • Spike shows up at the Magic Box and Giles tells him he’s not welcome. He also tells him to get over Buffy and move on, because it will never happen.
  • Again… Why are we not staking this guy?
  • Long term, I know why not… But, in the moment, there is no reason why any one of this show’s main characters should not separate his head from his body.
  • Katrina, Warren’s real live girlfriend, runs into April the Robot.
  • When April mentions Warren, Katrina gets angry and happens to angrily state that Warren is her boyfriend.
  • This doesn’t sit well with April, who then crushes her to the point that she passes out from lack of oxygen.
  • Buffy and Warren find April holding Katrina. She’s still alive.
  • Buffy forces Warren to tell April that he’s breaking up with her.
  • Instead of manning up, Warren just deflects by telling April he loves Buffy. Which makes her angry enough to fight the Slayer.
  • And they fight until April’s batteries begin dying…
  • They have a pleasant conversation as April runs out of energy.
  • Spike goes to Warren’s and demands a Buffybot.
  • Buffy gets home to find flowers delivered for Joyce.
  • Then she finds Joyce lying on the couch. She’s not moving.
  • Thus preparing us for arguably the best and most heartbreaking episode of the entire series.
  • Body count: Robots – 1; Humans – 1
