Omelet Shoppe Confessions: The Creepy Night Guard

Omelet ShoppeStep back in time with me to another trip to the Omelet Shoppe. Through a haze of time travel and cigarette smoke, you’ll see the Creepy Night Guard.

As an establishment that stays open 24/7, the Omelet Shoppe saw its share of hooligans and ruffians (some of whom you’ll hear about in a later confession). As a result of these (often drunk) trouble makers, the Omelet Shoppe kept a night guard on retainer. This is the Creepy Night Guard.

Picture a tall, skinny guy in his early to mid-fifties with the rough build of Barney Fife. However, instead of a sickly, pale complexion, imagine him with skin that’s reminiscent of old, worn out leather. Now picture him with a lazy eye and a permanent crooked smirk plastered to his face. Please don’t forget the smell of cigarettes, that’s crucial to any memory of the Omelet Shoppe.

This man would make rounds in the dining area every half hour or so. The way he would eyeball people as he walked by the tables just sent chills down our collective spines. When I remember him, I think of a Vietnam war vet with PTSD who never really left the jungle. It seemed like every time he turned a corner he was looking for Charlie. And I’m pretty sure he was packing heat. There was a part of me that felt safer knowing there was security on site. There was a bigger part of me that was really scared.

Creepy Night Guard, I salute you.

  1. Hey, Peckster… I think you and I are going to be friends. If you visit Melanie’s blog on her musings AKA Dose it matter who I am, then you have the same sense of humor was we do.

I decided to visit from comments you made on her blog… and I was worried you were going to fail me in interest… AND YOU succeeded in pulling me in with your story of the creepy night guard. 🙂

There’s a job out there for every type of character, isn’t there? I’ve known some people that worked the graveyard shift… and many of them did look like them came from the grave/crypt. That song doesn’t lie- The Freaks come out at Night. They are interesting characters, for sure.

Damaged in some way… or just really off-beat for regular culture. I posted awhile ago about the druggie manager I had at Del Taco (as a kid) that would come on to do the graveyard shift (that one was 24 hour drive through) – his favorite word was “bonus” – such an odd character. So bizarre on so many levels outside of his drug use.
